Tax Taskforces

Tax Taskforces are specialist teams that carry out intensive bursts of tax compliance activity in specific trade sectors and locations across the UK: focussing on areas that the taxmen see as particularly “high risk” in terms of evaded tax.

Different trade sectors and geographical areas are announced from time to time. The taskforces target tax payers in that business sector or location for a period of 3-9 months. The taskforces then move on to other business sectors or areas. The taxman’s Taskforces bring together various HMRC compliance and enforcement teams.  They target the perceived highest-risk cases in specific sectors and location, typically focusing on groups of up to 300 taxpayers.

Taskforces created so far have had targets as diverse as: restaurants and fast food outlets deliberately falsifying their records and mis-declaring their true sales levels; scrap metal dealers suspected of suppression of income (particularly cash) or inflated expenditure; self-employed builders; landlords owning or renting three or more properties; taxpayers not submitting their statutory returns across Corporation Tax, Income Tax Self-Assessment, PAYE and VAT; retail grocery businesses; hair and beauty businesses; the motor trade; the rag trade including manufacturing, wholesale, retail and textile recycling; dog-breeders; and targeting professionals for the first time, e.g.London Lawyers.
